About Our Ministry
StreetLight Ministries came into existence after two years of ministering to
the homeless on the streets of Wichita by walking on Friday nights and Sunday
mornings in the parks, along the river, in the alleys and any areas where they
sleep and congregate. We encountered and ministered to the homeless, the
forgotten, mentally challenged, drug and alcohol addicted, prostitutes,
dealers, the abused and the disabled. After seeing first hand the needs of
these brothers and sisters, we desire to do more to help them out of their
situation, rather than to just comfort them in their pain. With this in mind, we
started a plan of ministry opportunities, current and future, which we intend to
develop and promote to the local community.
Where we Minister:
StreetLight Ministries operates in Sedgwick County, Kansas. Our focus is
generally the downtown area of Wichita . We have recently partnered with
Messiah's Branch at 900 S. Broadway and intend to serve some meals in the
future. We are also planning some kind of event to honor homeless veterans
on Veteran's Day.
Adopt A Home Program:
We currently own and operate a duplex on South Topeka a two bedroom home
on South Main. Each unit houses a gentleman that was previously living on
the street. We began this ministry in November of 2006 when one homeless
individual was "evicted" from the park so the City could put up Holiday
decorations. This individual, living on a fixed disability income from his
service in the Air Force, assists us with maintaining the property and grounds.
The gentleman in the second unit is now employed and planning for his
future. He has resided with us for nearly a year of a one year program, after
which he and his future wife will be moving into the house on South Main. The
homeless gentleman staying in the South Main house as it's being renovated
found a job and moved out of Wichita.
Our future plans include assisting several women that need to get off the
street, by finding suitable apartments or rental homes for the winter. We are
prayerfully seeking funding assistance from local churches and business
leaders to provide winter shelter, or to adopt a home of their own. We would
offer help and assistance with setting up and managing this program. A loving
and caring church adoptive family is a major step for these individuals to
return to a normal healthy life.
